Stroud’s Christmas lights come on at the Goodwill Evening, and the only 2026 date published so far is Friday 4 December, 6pm to 9pm, in the town centre. That comes from the InStroud listing on VisitStroud.uk, which is the closest thing the event has to an official page. (VisitStroud.uk, Stroud Goodwill Evening 2026)

Read that listing carefully, though, because it contradicts itself. The date fields say 04/12/2026. The paragraph underneath says “we are looking forward to seeing you all on Friday 5th December”, which was the 2025 date. The listing was posted in April 2025 and the body text has not been rewritten since.

Friday 4 December 2026 is the first Friday of the month, which is where the event has fallen in each of the last three years, so the date fields are almost certainly the right ones. Take the 6pm to 9pm window as provisional until an organiser confirms it.

Why nobody has confirmed it yet

The Goodwill Evening has an organiser problem, and it is on the record. In October 2025 Tony Davey, then interim chairman of the Chamber of Trade, told Stroud Times that “there is no single organiser for the event this year”. (Stroud Times, 20 October 2025)

That was the year the event shrank back to one night. In 2024 it had been expanded and rebranded the Stroud Goodwill Festival, running across Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December, with the Saturday added for people who find the Friday crowds and noise too much. So the honest position on 5 September is: a date exists, the shape of the evening does not. This page will be updated when it does.

What the evening looked like in 2025

  • Lantern procession, 6pm to 6.30pm, setting off from Bank Gardens and arriving at St Laurence’s Church at 6.30pm
  • Christmas Tree Festival at St Laurence’s Church, 10am to 9pm, with about 100 trees
  • Shambles indoor market, 8am to 9pm
  • Shambles outdoor market, 5pm to 9pm
  • Goodwill Market at the Cornhill, 5pm to 9pm
  • Shops open late across the town centre, with food and drink outlets open through the evening

The Christmas tree lights switch-on, the parade and the markets have been the three fixed elements every year, including the year the event was restructured.

The Saturday after has carried the town’s usual Cornhill farmers’ market plus the Shambles outdoor market, so if the Friday crowds are not for you, the Saturday morning is the quieter version of the same weekend.

Road closures

No temporary road closure order for Goodwill Evening 2026 has been published.

The precedent is clear enough to plan around. In past years the town centre has been closed to traffic through the evening: in 2022 Stroud Times reported the closure running from 5pm to 9pm, and Stroud District Council issued a temporary closure order covering both days of the 2024 event.

If you need to be in the town centre by car on 4 December, assume the core streets are shut from late afternoon and park on the edge. What is still open

Three things are genuinely unknown as of 5 September 2026:

  • Whether there is a single organiser this year, which determines how much of the 2025 programme returns
  • The lantern procession, which needs lantern-making workshops in November to happen at all. In past years those have run at weekends through November
  • Whether a Goodwill Saturday is added again, as it was in 2024 and dropped in 2025
